Following his readings at the Leipzig book fair, Marko Dinić will be discussing his novel “Buch der Gesichter” also at the IRTG in the format of a workshop.
The novel, nominated for the German Book Prize in 2025, portrays a multifaceted panorama of memories of Belgrade in the year 1942. Centered around the day when occupied Serbia is declared “free of Jews”, the readers accompany the main character, Isak Ras, on his ventures through the city, as he searches for answers of unsolved mysteries from the past. The book captures the continuity of Jewish life in Southeast Europe, interwoven with the ruptures caused by persecution and murder.
The workshop will be held in English with the main goal of engaging in a discussion of how fiction narratives are developed while working closely with historical sources. Drawing from that, we will have an exchange about the role of Material Culture and Alltagsgeschichte in literature.
